The stomach is a large sac that expands as we eat food. Weight loss surgery decreases the capacity of the stomach so that you will no longer be able to eat large meals. The surgery also reduces appetite by removing a center for the hormone, ghrelin, which is responsible for hunger.
Our bariatric surgeons offer three kinds of weight loss surgery
- Sleeve gastrectomy
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- Revisional surgery after gastric banding
These surgeries can typically be performed using minimally invasive techniques via small incisions using laparoscopy or assistance with the daVinci robot.
During a sleeve gastrectomy, your surgeon will revise the shape of your stomach from a large sac to a thin tube. During a gastric bypass, your surgeon first takes the stomach down to a small pouch and then re-arranges and attaches the beginning of the intestines directly to the new stomach to allow for passage of food and digestion.
Patients will follow a liquid diet just before and shortly after the surgery to allow the stomach to heal before eating regular food. Patients usually stay in the hospital one to three nights. Most patients lose 80 to 100 pounds in the first year.
